Secret Poem PAD April 2nd

Pocket Watch

A secret is a pocket watch, the gold

ones of men in black and white

daguerreotype photos, chains hanging

from waistcoats, owners staring straight

ahead, unsmiling. One hand inside wool

tweed holds the timepiece, stroking

the engraved cover, comforted by filigree

etchings and subtle scratches. The minutes

tick inside the hunter case, a thumb pops

the hinge to open the hour, releases the want,

and snaps it closed again––sighing.
